Why Non-Office Jobs are More Fun

If you’re in the market for a new job, but dread the thought of spending all day in a tiny fluorescent-lit cubicle, there’s good news: you can enjoy a better—and healthier—quality of work life outside of an office. Here’s how you can stand to benefit from choosing a job that won’t trap you indoors or chain you to a desk.

  • More fresh air. Non-desk jobs often involve moving around in a variety of environments, including the outdoors. Getting adequate fresh air increases your blood oxygen levels, leading to increased serotonin (“happy” hormone) levels and boosted vitamin D production. Both of these contribute to a better mood and better brain function.

  • A more active lifestyle. Sitting at a desk all day makes for a sedentary lifestyle, which comes with serious health risks. It can also leave you fighting to stay awake and struggling with neck, shoulder, wrist, back, and hip problems. Choosing a non-desk job can go a long way toward keeping you awake, focused, moving, and physically functional.

  • Casual, comfortable, affordable clothes. Jobs that require at least light-to-moderate physical activity and take place mainly outside of an office setting usually come with a more casual dress code. Instead of having to wear expensive, constrictive, and mishap-prone business wear, you’ll be moving freely in things like polo shirts and chinos or even (presentable) streetwear.

  • Easier on the eyes. Office jobs typically involve spending long periods of time in front of a computer screen, which can be unpleasant and cause digital eye strain. Non-desk jobs, though they may require some time on a computer, generally offer your eyes a healthier variety of vision contexts: distance and close-up, reading and non-reading, and natural and artificial lighting.

  • Greater task variety. Office jobs do require a variety of tasks—but most of them are still done on a computer or a nearby piece of office equipment. Having a non-desk job allows you to use your hands and limbs more, improving your dexterity, strength, and balance. Doing a wide variety of tasks during your workday is also a great way to stay mentally engaged with your job and prevent boredom.
