The Surprising Wellness Benefits of Volunteering

Key Takeaways

  • Volunteering can improve mental health by reducing stress, boosting mood, and increasing feelings of purpose and accomplishment.

  • Research links volunteering to better physical health, including lower blood pressure, improved mobility, and greater longevity.

  • Giving your time helps build meaningful relationships and stronger connections to your community.

  • Volunteer opportunities that support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) help foster inclusion, independence, and social connection.

Most people volunteer because they want to help others. However, a growing body of research suggests that volunteering may also be one of the best things you can do for your own well-being. From reducing stress to strengthening social connections, the health benefits of volunteering extend beyond what most people imagine.

Improved Mental Health

One of the most well-documented benefits of volunteering is its positive impact on mental wellness. No matter what you’re going through in life, volunteering can enhance your confidence, sense of purpose, and connection to your community. Many volunteers report a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that stems from making a meaningful contribution.

Acts of kindness activate reward centers in the brain, releasing feel-good chemicals associated with happiness and emotional well-being. Helping others can also reduce stress responses and improve mood. Volunteers frequently experience better mental health outcomes — including higher life satisfaction, improved emotional well-being, and lower rates of depression — than those who don’t give their time.

Better Physical Health

Studies have found links between volunteering and better physical health. This includes lower rates of stress and hypertension, improved mobility, and enhanced overall health, especially among older adults. Some research has even associated volunteering with a longer lifespan.

Among the best reasons to volunteer is the extra movement and steps you’ll fit into your day. Many volunteer activities naturally encourage at least some movement, which in turn benefits cardiovascular health and weight management. Giving your time can even help to prevent diabetes, chronic diseases, and certain types of cancer.

Stronger Social Connection

Strong social connections are a key component of overall health, and volunteering creates opportunities to build them. Volunteering can help you meet new people, strengthen your existing relationships, and become more engaged in your community. These social connections can be especially valuable for retirees, people who work remotely, individuals who have recently relocated, or anyone experiencing loneliness.

Volunteering also helps people feel part of something larger than themselves. Working alongside others toward a common goal can foster belonging, trust, and a greater sense of community.

Why Serving Individuals With IDDs Can Be Especially Rewarding

For people seeking a volunteer experience that creates a direct and lasting impact, supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) can be especially meaningful.

Progressive Lifestyles is dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities live as independently as possible while participating fully in their communities. Through community-based programs, recreational activities, and support services, individuals with IDDs have opportunities to develop skills, build relationships, and pursue personal goals.

Volunteers help make many of these opportunities possible. Whether you’re assisting with community outings, recreational programs, special events, or other activities, volunteers help create experiences that foster inclusion and connection.

For anyone looking to improve their own well-being while creating a positive impact, volunteering offers a rare opportunity to enrich both the giver and the recipient.
