High-Quality Residence Programs for People With Disabilities

If your adult child or loved one has an intellectual or developmental disability, a group home for adults with disabilities can be an excellent way to help them become more independent. These residence programs offer not just a place to live, but support staff who are trained in intellectual disability services. However, it’s essential to choose one that is a good fit for your child. Here’s how to find a high-quality group home for people with disabilities.

  • Plan ahead and research local options. It’s common for these homes to have a waiting list, so it’s essential to do your research, arrange home tours, and get on the list of every viable option well before your child or loved one needs to move in. Because group homes can be in short supply in many states, consider some in your wider region rather than only in your immediate community.

  • Talk to the individual about their preferences and goals. It’s important to include your adult child or loved one in the decision-making process. Find out what their priorities are for a high-quality residential experience, which will vary for each individual.

  • Assess the neighborhood and the home. As you’re conducting tours, take a walk around the neighborhood. Does it seem safe and well-maintained? You can also use apps to learn about community crime rates. Observe the home and its atmosphere carefully as well. Can it support the level of independence vs. support your child needs? Is it clean, organized, free of obvious hazards, and generally in good repair? Does it offer accessibility features?

  • Ask general questions. Ask your tour guide questions about things like the staff-to-resident ratio, staff training and turnover rates, rules and policies, medication management, resident activities, and whether transportation services are provided. Be sure to ask about funding and financial stability as well.

  • Learn about each organization’s philosophy and culture. Ask about the organization’s approach to serving individuals with disabilities. Administrators and staff should be passionate about their mission and should offer a supportive, caring environment in which residents can grow and feel valued.
