Accessible Things to Do in Southeastern Michigan this Summer

Updated: Sep 26, 2022

Summer is in full swing, and families everywhere are looking for ways to make the most of it. If you have a child or adult with special needs, you’ll want to look for attractions and activities with inclusive accessibility features or inclusion services that allow individuals with disabilities to get in on the fun. Here are some great ways to spend quality time with your child during the warmer months and create lasting memories in Waterford, Michigan and surrounding Oakland County:

  • Oakland County Parks. Oakland County Parks and Recreation encompasses a number of parks and recreation programs (including water parks) that are ADA compliant and include adaptive equipment and services for individuals with disabilities. Available activities include golf, boating, hiking, field sports, swimming, picnicking, and more.

  • AMC Sensory Friendly Films. AMC Sensory Friendly Films offers movie showings designed for an autism-friendly experience. The sound and lights are turned down during these film events, and patrons can bring their own snacks and move around the theater. Metro Detroit participates in this program, and you can check out nearby locations and showings here.

  • The Waterford Parks & Recreation Social Club. The Waterford Parks & Recreation Social Club isn’t a destination, but a program for individuals with special needs. It organizes one supervised social activity per month like yoga, fishing, movies, arts and crafts, and more—including offroading events during Disability Dirt Days.

You can always find accessible things to do when you’re part of a community that offers high-quality services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. If you live in or near Waterford, Michigan, you can explore residential options at Progressive Lifestyles.
